Strata Safety delivers refuge chambers to coal mines in Australia
Strata Safety Products is pleased to announce delivery of its first emergency refuge chambers into Australian coal mines.
Two chambers shipped the week of November 16 to an underground longwall operation in Queensland. This operation is managed by Rio Tinto Coal Australia on behalf of the joint venture partners, Queensland Coal Pty Limited and Mitsui Kestrel Coal Investment. It is presently undergoing a mine
extension project, which is designed to allow more efficient access to the mine's existing resources. This expansion will extend the life of the mine by 20 years and increase annual mine capacity to up to 5.7 million tonnes.
The Strata Safety Refuge Chambers going into this operation are stand-alone, walk-in units fully equipped with breathable air and other supplies to sustain life for 48 hours.
Also this month, Strata Safety delivered two AIRDOC® Stations to Yancoal Australia Pty Ltd.’s Austar coal mine. The AIRDOC® Change-Over Station is a unique transitional unit designed to provide a non-toxic environment for SCSR exchange during an emergency evacuation. In addition, in situations where self-escape is not possible and miners are trapped underground, the AIRDOC®, equipped with a Strata Safety
air-powered CO2 scrubber, can be used as a refuge station for up to 36 hours.
Strata Safety Products is a worldwide leading supplier of emergency refuge chambers and has delivered in excess of 500 units to coal mines in the United States. Strata is now strongly positioned to deliver the same range of safety products throughout the coal mining industry of Australia.
“We are very excited about these first deliveries of refuge chambers to coal mining operations and believe it is paving the way to a new level of safety in underground coal mines in Australia,” stated Tony Farrugia, General Manager of Strata Safety Products in Australia. “We now have on-hand for display a steel walk-in chamber, a portable, inflatable Fresh Air Bay Chamber, and a portable, inflatable Fresh Air Bay Training Unit. All of these are available for viewing at our facility in Melbourne.”
The Fresh Air Bay Training Unit can also be sent to mine sites of potential customers for evaluation and trial purposes, he said.
