StrataCrete Plug Seals. MSHA Approved
StrataCrete Plug Seals are designed and engineered by Strata Mine Services Inc. They are installed to permanently seal off abandoned areas in underground coal mines. The Strata Mine Services Seals meet MSHA requirements under the final rule and are approved for installation.
The design of the Plug Seal includes two walls, constructed from concrete blocks or other form materials, set a specific distance apart. This distance is dependent on the height and width of the mine entry. The area between the formwalls is then remotely filled with a specially blended concrete mix called StrataCrete. A drainage system and gas sampling pipes are incorporated during construction.
Strata Mine Services custom blends the StrataCrete to suit the intended application. It is mixed and pumped from remote areas underground or from the surface over distances of at least 3000 feet.
The Plug Seals are intended for areas with weaker, softer coal ribs because the increased coverage of the seal helps to stabilize the ribs. This seal design is best suited for areas that are not expected to encounter significant ground convergence.
120 psi StrataCrete PlugSeal – Approval Number 120 M - 01.0
120 psi StrataCrete Plug Seals are intended for sealing mine areas where the atmosphere behind the seals is not inert. The shear strength of the seal is 3000psi, with a curing time of 7 to 14 days.
The 120 psi Plug Seals are designed for mine openings ranging from 2.5 to 16 feet high and 16 to 40 feet wide.
Example Seal Thicknesses:
- From 7 feet high by 24 feet wide and approximately 8.5 feet thick
- 9 feet high by 24 feet wide and approximately 10.3 feet thick
50 psi StrataCrete Plug Seal – Approval Number 50M-01-0
The 50 psi Plug Seal is very similar in design to the 120 psi seal and is intended for use in mine areas where the atmosphere behind the seal is inert.
Example Seal Tthickness:
- 7 ft high by 24 ft wide is approximately 4 ft thick
