Proximity Detection and Collision Avoidance with Strata Safety ProductsHazardAvert Proximity Detection

Strata Safety Products LLC is pleased to announce a new distributorship agreement with Frederick Mining Controls of Huntsville, Alabama to offer HazardAvert® systems for proximity detection and collision avoidance in underground mining.

HazardAvert was developed to address one of the primary safety problems in underground mining today; workers becoming injured, disabled or killed by personal contact with or collisions involving moving machinery. HazardAvert visually and audibly warns workers when in close proximity to the equipment or disables the equipment when a worker is in a position of imminent danger to his safety.

Fundamentally, the HazardAvert system consists of a low-frequency signal marker device called the Generator, a personal-alarm device (PAD) and a vehicle-alarm-device (VAD). The Generator is installed onto any machinery and with the use of electromagnetic signals, marks the areas around the machinery that are considered to be potentially hazardous.

HazardAvert® Generator on coal mining shuttle car

The PAD is worn by workers to alert them when they have entered a potentially dangerous area marked by a Generator. VADs are installed on mining machinery and equipment and detect marker fields created by Generators on other equipment.

HazardAvert is ideal for use in all types of mining operations, as well as construction sites and warehousing facilities. The system has been successfully installed underground on continuous miners, shuttle cars, supply scoops, feeder breakers, and roof bolters and on surface equipment including haul trucks, drag lines, forklifts, light duty trucks and other machinery.

February 2010On Site Gas System
The Complete Inert Mine Seal Solution - Strata Mine Services and On Site Gas Systems

Strata Mine Services LLC and On Site Gas Systems Inc. have announced a strategic partnership to expand their mine seal construction and behind-seal inerting capabilities to provide a comprehensive solution for US coal mines.

“Every mine eventually needs ventilation seals built, as well as assistance with nitrogen inerting. Bringing these companies together and offering nitrogen generators as part of seal installation, provides mine operators with a convenient and cost-effective solution,” says Jeff Hamrick, Vice President and General Manager of Strata Mine Services.

Strata Mine Services currently offers two mine seal products that are MSHA approved under Final Rule 30 CFR Part 75, and additional designs are currently pending approval. Available now and approved for both the 120psi and 50psi segments of the regulations: the Stratacrete Plug Seal and the PMR Reinforced Seal.

The Stratacrete Plug Seal is designed with two formwalls constructed across the entry and remotely filled with a concrete mix called Stratacrete. As the width, or coverage of the seal, increases, so does its PMR reinforced 120psi mine sealstrength. The PMR Reinforced Seal is constructed by anchoring rebar into the mine’s roof and floor, then wiring it with 3D welded wire mesh. This forms a strong rib system which can then be fully coated with high-strength gunite or shotcrete. The gunite is sprayed to overlap all edges and create an airtight seal.

Through the new partnership with On Site Gas, Strata Mine Services now also offers the additional service of inerting seal atmospheres during construction and until the seal reaches full strength.
On Site Gas nitrogen generators provide a safe and economical solution to inerting the atmosphere within sealed mine areas; either from a nearby underground location or from above ground. Generating nitrogen on location offers significant savings over the cost of liquid delivered through a borehole, both in terms ofNitrogen inerting with On Site Gas convenience and the mine’s financial bottom line. The nitrogen can be made on-site for the duration of a project, eliminating the need for local gas supplier deliveries.

On Site Gas CEO Guy Hatch says that mines will certainly benefit from this joint effort.

“Each company has a great reputation within the industry for the products and services they provide,” he said. “By working together, we can offer a complete and easy solution to the mines.”

January 2010StrataCommTrac Wireless Communication and Tracking System
Strata Safety goes WIRELESS with COMMTRAC system

Strata Safety Products is pleased to introduce a completely wireless, intrinsically safe digital communication and tracking system for underground mining, StrataCommTrac.

StrataCommTrac is a self-forming, self healing, node-based system that communicates on a mesh architecture. It is a simple "pick and place", node-to-node system that does not require a hard-wire backbone or the implementation of a pre-existing communication system.

The system incorporates a network of fixed nodes and personal interfaces which wirelessly transmit data to a surface monitoring station. Each component is individually battery operated; utilizing AAA and D size alkaline cells.  Fixed node battery life will exceed one year, with no recharging necessary, and no external power source required.

StrataCommTrac is designed to comply with MSHA's PPL #P09-V-01 by providing post-accident two-way communication between miners underground and surface operators, as well as real-time electronic tracking. With the use of small mobile communication devices which are carried by the miners at all times, communication with the surface can be achieved through canned and freeform messages or pager functions. These compact, lightweight units are designed to attach unobtrusively to a miner’s belt or vest.StrataCommTrac wirelesss communication device

Additionally, for miner tracking, the mobile communication device automatically transmits identification data every 30 seconds and is received by all fixed nodes within signal range. This capability enables the tracking of a miner within 200 feet throughout the entire mine. The tracking information is mapped and logged on the user- friendly Graphical User Interface located on the surface.

"We are very excited about our new wireless communication and tracking system," company president, Rory Paton-Ash said of the system. "Both underground and above-ground testing have yielded very successful results. We expect MSHA approval shortly and are able to provide system proposals immediately; including in-mine evaluations."

A significant advantage of the StrataCommTrac Communication and Tracking system is the simplicity and StrataCommTrac wireless communication systemlow cost of the components and the ease of their installation. Rugged 12.5" x 4" x 3” nodes which include internal antennas, are secured in strategic locations around the mine where they are immediately operational, and simple battery or node replacement eliminates the need for costly repairs.

Strata Mine Services Seal Receives Final MSHA Approval
(MSHA Approval Number: 120M – 01.0)

On September 17th 2008, the Stratacrete Plug Seal, designed and engineered by Strata Mine Services, is officially the first ventilation seal to meet the requirements of the new MSHA Final Rule (30 CFR Part 75) and successfully gain approval.

The MSHA Final Rule, effective April 18th 2008, specifies new requirements for seal designs, construction, maintenance and repair. It addresses the required strength of the seals, levels of overpressure and the monitoring and control of the environment behind the seals. According to the Final Rule, in areas where the atmosphere behind the seal is not inert, the seals are to withstand repeated 4-second explosions of 120psi. MSHA has ruled that after October 18th 2008, only seals with final approval will be cleared for installation.

The Stratacrete Plug Seal is constructed with formwalls set at a specific distance apart and then remotely filled with a specially blended concrete mix called StrataCrete. StrataCrete can be mixed and pumped from remote underground areas over distances of 3,000 feet, or from the surface over distances of 5,000 feet. The thickness of the seal is dependent on the height and width of the entry. The Plug Seal is approved for heights ranging from 2.5ft to 16ft and for widths from 16ft to 40ft.

“We are pleased not only to have gained MSHA Approval on our seals, but also to be the first company to do so. Strata Mine Services is currently working at obtaining approval for additional seals. One in particular is our popular pre-stressed seal that we believe will be a significant benefit for the US Coal Mining Industry,” says Rory Paton-Ash, the President and CEO of Strata Mine Services.
