Safe Room Benefits:
- Built to accommodate larger numbers of people
- Relatively inexpensive to build and equip
- Ready for immediate use
- Most practical if they can be equipped with a borehole to the surface
- Can be connected to the mine air supply
- Cooling system with battery backup can be provided
- Does not interfere with ongoing mining operations
- Good for travel ways/escapeways and can serve multiple purposes
Construction
Safe Rooms are either excavated out of the side wall of the entry, in a cross-cut or are constructed in an entry using multiple stoppings. For construction in coal mines and to meet federal regulations, Strata offers a 15 PSI Block Stopping, along with a thin spray-on impermeable liner to coat the walls of the room.
Access
An explosion resistant door provides access into the room. An optional Airlock and purge air system are available.
Main Room
Breathable air in the main room can be accomplished in three ways.
- Through a borehole from the surface
- Compressed mine air connected to a high quality air filtration system to
purify the air - Compressed oxygen and air cylinders connected to an electric or powerless CO2 scrubber. Strata offers the option of an active CO2 Scrubber or a passive scrubbing system in a curtain form. Both scrubbing systems utilize soda lime chemicals. The breathable air system can be housed in a mobile steel container called the Strata Barricade Air Skid.
Optional Supplies
A scalable supply of food and water are provided, along with a first aid kit, a communication device, flashlights and gas monitors. Benches are in place for additional comfort and a portable toilet, along with supplies as needed.
