Emergency Refuge Chambers (ERC)
Emergency Refuge Chambers are built with occupants’ safety and comfort in mind. They are equipped with primary and back-up sources of power and breathable air, air conditioning with dehumidifying as needed, individual cushioned seats, food, water, a private lavatory and optional communication and gas monitoring systems.
Strata's chambers are built to withstand the harsh underground environment of mining and incorporate numerous handling faculties such as fork lift guides and lifting lugs.
Strata delivers one of the leading brands in emergency refuge chambers worldwide. With manufacturing facilities in the United States, Mexico, Australia and South Africa, Strata’s chambers are designed to be easily tailored to meet local and industry regulations. Considerable time and resources have been invested into fully understanding the underground working environment in different mines in different countries..
Fully automatic battery backup systems and specialized multi-stage chargers are standard on all chambers. Chambers can be connected to the mine's main power lines for an indefinitely supply of power and battery charging. If mine power is lost while the chamber is in use, the system will automatically switch to battery power.
Potential heat build-up in enclosed areas can be detrimental to the health and safety of chamber occupants. Strata offers an optional, high-quality air conditioning and dehumidifying system that will regulate internal air temperatures and eliminate moisture accumulation.
The StrataConnect™ suite of communication products offer highly flexible and cost-effective networking options that extend the mine’s existing communications system to the refuge chamber for daily monitoring and preventative maintenance, as well as live connection for real-time communications and monitoring.
High-speed Ethernet capabilities for live video streaming, voice communications, personnel tracking and numerous atmospheric monitoring activities from both inside and outside shelters:
- Gas Levels (O2, CO2, CO, H2S)
- Battery voltage
- Mine power
- Air Conditioner programming, operation and monitoring
Daily remote monitoring and preventative maintenance safeguards the security of the chambers and helps to ensure they remain operationally ready.
Network options include:
- StrataConnect DigitalBRIDGE - Power-over-Ethernet (PoE) coaxial cable
- StrataConnect DigitalBRIDGE Plus+ - PoE leaky feeder cable
- StrataConnect Wireless - Fully wireless and battery-powered (can be interfaced with existing wired systems and Strata’s DigitalBRIDGE)
Strata specializes in custom construction of refuge chambers to meet individual mine needs.
