Emergency Refuge Chambers
Strata offers one of the leading brands of emergency refuge solutions available worldwide. With manufacturing facilities in the United States, Mexico, Australia and South Africa, Strata’s chambers are designed and built to meet specific needs and requirements of specific territories. Considerable time and resources have been invested into fully understanding the issues of working underground in different mines in different countries.
Emergency Refuge Chambers are built with occupants’ safety and comfort in mind. They are equipped with primary and back-up sources of power and breathable air supplies, air conditioning and dehumidifying as needed, cushioned seats, food, water, a private lavatory and optional communication and gas detection systems.
They are built to withstand the harsh underground environment and incorporate numerous handling faculties.
Fully automatic battery backup systems and specialized multi-stage chargers are standard on all chambers. The chambers are connected to local power to maintain the charge on the battery but will automatically switch to battery power should the local power be disrupted.
Batteries are located either at the rear of the chamber, or stored on a pull-out “tray” at the entrance of the chamber. This design option provides added convenience in accessing batteries for maintenance. Batteries can be bundled in portable packs to optimize handling and transportation.
Strata specializes in custom construction of refuge chambers and can vary structural dimensions to meet individual mine needs.
Wheel and hitch packages are available to assist in moving the chambers into and around the mines and in restrictive areas.
Segmented Chambers: Built to overcoming entry shaft and/or handling restrictions on-site
Compact, Mobile Chambers: Built to be situated close to the working face for fast accessibility for 4 to 6 workers.
By utilizing StrataConnect DigitalBRIDGE™, mines can cost effectively connect their refuge chambers to the mine’s communication network and open a lifeline of communication and monitoring resources.
In emergency mode, DigitalBRIDGE’s high-speed digital capabilities can provide live video streaming from onboard cameras, voice communications, personnel tracking and numerous atmospheric monitoring activities from both inside and outside shelters.
Monitoring options include:
- Gas Levels (O2, CO2, CO, H2S)
- Door “OPEN” Sensor (optional)
- Remotely Turn Emergency Chamber Lights on during emergency
- Remotely Turn Emergency Siren on during emergency
Furthermore, daily remote monitoring safeguards the security of the shelters, and helps to ensure that they remain ready for use.
