HazardAvert® Surface and Underground

HazardAvert® Surface and Underground

There are inherent dangers involved with mining, and people working in and around heavy machinery ranks amongst the leading causes of injuries and fatalities.

Working underground:

  • Restricted visibility
  • Confined work spaces
  • Out of site pedestrians or vehicles around corners
  • Mobile equipment and pedestrians working in close proximity
  • Pedestrians interacting with numerous pieces of equipment at the same time
  • Difficulty determining travel speeds
  • Visual obstructions such as equipment, ventilation curtains and/or barriers

Working on the surface:

  • The large scale and volume of machinery
  • The diverse scale of vehicles and machinery
  • Significant blind-spots on large machinery
  • Requirement for people to work in close proximity to machinery
  • Large equipment starting up and/or moving in reverse
  • Restricted vision due to time of day and weather conditions

Studies show that a large majority of accidents and injuries occur when machinery and vehicles are traveling at lower rates of speed and in reverse.

HazardAvert® is an electromagnetic proximity detection system designed to increase personnel safety and safety awareness while working in and around mobile machinery. It is designed to prevent vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-pedestrian accidents and collisions, particularly crushing- and pinning-type accidents in underground environments.

The system detects when a person or vehicle enters the “hazard zone” around operating or parked machinery. It also detects when moving machinery blindly approaches or reverses towards a pedestrian or another vehicle. It will automatically sound warning alarms received by all parties involved.

Additionally, for underground applications, HazardAvert can be optionally interfaced into the controls of the equipment to automatically slow and/or stop the vehicle completely.*

*HazardAvert can be programmed to stop or disable equipment at specified speeds determined by the OEM and customer.

HazardAvert is automatic and does not require operator activation. The zones remain enabled at all times to provide collision avoidance, even when equipment is parked.

Electromagnetic zones are fully functional both on the surface and underground, enabling vehicles to travel between locations and remain fully armed and detectable.

Wide-angle cameras placed on the front and rear of machinery, along with an on-dash display screen, provide live views of the surrounding area depending on direction of travel. The screen user interface also includes a graphical representation of where other vehicles and/or pedestrians are located in relation to the vehicle.
