Staying Compliant with Strata Safety Products

Release June 30, 2011

ATLANTA – Strata Safety Products is pleased to announce that all mines that elected to install Strata CommTrac communications and tracking systems were compliant as of June 15th 2011, according to the Mine Improvement and New Emergency Response Act of 2006 (MINER Act).

As specified in the Mining Safety and Health Administration’s Program Policy Letter P11-V-13, all US coal mines are required to have two-way post-emergency communications and electronic location tracking systems installed as of June 15, 2011. In response to this regulation, Strata Safety Products announced Strata CommTrac in January 2010, offering customers a completely wireless option to remain compliant.

Strata CommTrac is a fully wireless battery-operated mesh communications and tracking system consisting of an underground network of stand-alone fixed communication nodes that communicate with miner-worn mobile devices to transmit data between miners underground and surface personnel. This completely untethered design allows for simple “pick-n-place” installation.

“The ease and speed of a CommTrac installation makes implementation of the system significantly less time consuming than alternative systems,” stated Chief Operating Officer Mike Berube. “One particular mine in Virginia was fully installed and operational in a span of five hours.”

System Functions and Highlights

  • Wireless mesh with no hard-wire backbone
  • No external antennas
  • Battery operated
  • Two-way text – individual or broadcast
  • Broadcast alerts
  • Bread-crumb tracking to within 200 feet and direction of travel
  • Real-time visual on surface interface
  • MSHA Approved

Since being awarded MSHA approval in November 2010, Strata Safety's CommTrac has captured over 10% of the market and crews have been actively installing systems into mines across the country. At the beginning of May 2011, the company had a little less than 20 mines awaiting installation completion prior to the June 15 deadline. The unmatched installation advantages of Strata CommTrac enabled crews to accomplish this goal by fully installing the systems and completing miner training in as little as two days per system.
